Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or BJJ is a combat martial art and sport that uses different technical maneuvers to obtain positional dominance where one can control a threat with highly effective ground fighting tactics.

One of the benefits of BJJ is that a smaller, weaker person can defend against a larger, stronger opponent by using proper positioning, technique and leverage.

ORIGINS OF BJJ

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art of Japanese origin that was born in the early 1900’s. Ju in Japanese means “gentleness,” and jutsu means “art” or “technique”. Therefore the literal translation is “gentle art.”

BJJ HISTORY

Mitsuyo Maeda, a Judo expert and champion prize fighter traveled to Brazil where he met Gastao Gracie. He taught Gracie’s son Carlos who eventually taught his brothers as well. The youngest brother, Helio Gracie was frail and of slight build and found it difficult to perform the techniques his brother had taught him so he modified the techniques to accommodate his size. Instead of mainly focusing on strength and speed he emphasized the use of leverage and timing. He eventually modified all the techniques he had learned and together with his brother Carlos, created Gracie/Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

What should I wear to class?

For Krav Maga classes, we recommend comfortable athletic wear. In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, students should wear a gi or no-gi attire, depending on the class format. If you’re unsure, feel free to ask!

What are the benefits of training in martial arts?

Because we place such a huge focus on safety and injury prevention, we're proud to say that injuries are very few and far between with our program. In fact, because martial arts gets you in great shape, and makes you strong and flexible, people often see LESS injuries in their lives.
